Update from Jamie Smith on our Campus Redevelopment Activities

As I have opportunities to meet with you during the workday, one of the most common questions I get is about what is happening with the space on our campus. We have lots of new changes coming to make Saint Joseph Hospital’s campus integrate with our community that I am excited to share.

In front of the main entrance, across 19th Avenue where the trailers used to be, there will be a seating area with flowers, trees and a community garden operated by Denver Urban Gardens to produce food for Metro Cares, as well as statues for guests to enjoy. The anticipated completion date for this project is the end of May.

The space south of the Russell Pavilion between Humboldt and Lafayette streets will be turned into a much-needed valet parking lot by the middle of July.

On the old Saint Joseph Hospital site located at 18th Avenue and Franklin Street, there will be green space for associates and our Midtown neighbors to take in fresh air and sunshine. Mid-June is the target completion for this space. Maintaining green space in this area will leave open the possibility of adapting to future business needs as they develop.

A community park, complete with a basketball court and some exercise equipment that the SJH Wellness Committee helped select, will be developed in the space formerly known as the old C lot southwest of 18th Avenue and Humboldt Street. The park should be fully ready for visitors in early September.

Finally, plans are underway to convert the Tammen Hall building, located on the hospital campus at 1010 East 19th Ave., to affordable independent senior housing. The target completion date for this project is late 2018.

By the end of the year, your patients and guests – as well as our neighbors, our associates and you! – will be able to enjoy our hospital’s campus as we’ve envisioned it since the move: a place to relax and recharge, and a place to exercise with colleagues and reconnect with our community.

Please stop by my office anytime with question about our plans for this space. I’m looking forward to joining you outside!
